Self-Care Doesn't Have To Be Expensive

Self-Care Doesn't Have To Be Expensive
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass… is by no means a waste of time."
- John Lubbock

We just wanted to pop in with a gentle reminder: self-care doesn’t have to be expensive.

It’s something we believe is worth talking about often, because let’s be honest, it’s easy to forget to make time for self-care, and just as easy to believe we need to spend money to do it “right.”

With social media constantly showing us curated routines, luxury or expensive products, and perfect aesthetics, it can start to make us feel like true self-care has to come with a price tag. Well, we're here to tell you that is simply not the case!

Now, we're not saying that you shouldn't treat yourself to something that you really enjoy, like a candle, skincare, or a cosy pair of winter pyjamas, because they can also be a lovely part of a self-care ritual! But the real reason for self-care? It’s about checking in with yourself, resting, and showing yourself kindness. And that part is free.

So, here are a few low-budget (or totally free!) self-care ideas you can try whenever you need to pause, to reset, or just a moment to breathe.

Self-Care Ideas!

  • Sit outside barefoot and just breathe
  • Do a 5-minute body scan meditation (YouTube has plenty!)
  • Journal using prompts
  • Watch the clouds or stars, try with no music or distractions

Gentle Escapes

  • Read a chapter of a feel-good book or poetry
  • Watch a nostalgic film from your childhood
  • Listen to a calming playlist or ambience
  • Rewatch your comfort show guilt-free
  • Take yourself on a solo “date” to a free local spot like a museum, garden, or beach

  • favourite scents and music
  • Moisturise slowly with intention (talk lovingly to your body as you do)
  • Paint your nails a colour that makes you feel soft or powerful
  • Make a DIY face mask
  • Stretch on the floor with candles and a playlist, meditation, or slow yoga

Creative Little Joys

  • Draw, paint, or collage with no end goal
  • Create a mini vision board using magazine cutouts or Pinterest
  • Write a letter to your future self
  • Make a list of things you're proud of, even the little wins
  • Bake something from scratch

Reset Rituals

  • Brew a cup of herbal tea and drink it slowly, phone-free
  • Light a candle and sit quietly until it burns for 10 minutes
  • Set a 10-minute timer and do absolutely nothing
  • Declutter one drawer, shelf, or bag (it feels oddly healing)
  • Lie on the floor and listen to one whole album start to finish

Connection Based

  • Send a kind message to someone you care about
  • Say “no” to something that drains you
  • Write down 3 ways you’ve grown this year
  • Make a list of what makes you feel safe, loved, and seen
  • Sit with your hand on your heart and say your favourite affirmation
